Joe Colombo (born Cesare Colombo) was born in Milan on July 30, 1930. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera and later attended architecture studies at the Politecnico di Milano. Early on, he moved between art and design, experimenting with new technologies and production methods, including through work connected to his familys electrical appliance business.
In the 1960s, Colombo became a key voice of Italian pop-era design, creating bold objects for daily life with an emphasis on adaptability and systems. He designed for brands including Oluce, Kartell, Alessi, and Boffi, and produced lasting icons like the Boby trolley and a series of experimental habitat concepts built around mobility and modular living. He died on July 30, 1971, his 41st birthday.
