Eames Wire-Base Chairs
Charles & Ray Eames
The base of these chairs reminded early observers of the Eiffel Tower. At the same time the Eameses were refining their fiberglass-reinforced plastic chairs, they began to experiment with bent and welded wire-chair-rsquo;s design. Charles and Ray Eames introduced the first fruit of their efforts in 1951. To achieve strength requirements and organic shape, they made the rim of their chair of a lighter-gauge wire and doubled it for strength and stability. This advance won them the first american mechanical patent for design.
