“Lighting or illumination is the deliberate use of light to achieve a practical or aesthetic effect.” Whether functional or for pure beauty, natural or artificial, lighting is an essential aspect of everyday life. It has the power to evoke emotions and transform an environment. Lighting extraordinaire Arturo Alvarez elevates the element by creating handmade, conceptual designs that take materials out of their usual context and explore their possibilities.

Since the beginning, Alvarez has developed his own style with strong personality. Born in Pontevedra, Spain in 1964, his designs and technique are rooted in traditional, handmade craftsmanship taking inspiration from nature with an emphasis on wellbeing and positive emotion. Identifying with the Bauhaus concepts of joining and reviewing shapes, volumes, and prospects, Alvarez has created a new vision of creative lighting.

Early in his career years, Alvarez surveyed figurative concepts influenced by nature. Later he evolved his direction into abstraction using minimal geometric shapes while continuing references to nature in the form of the female body which becomes a repeated theme over time. Currently, Alvarez is exploring new ways of expression using lighting as his language and the human being as the main subject. Incorporating distinctive shapes, lights and shadows he captures expressions of encounters and missed encounters. In most recent years Alvarez has worked in researching and experimenting to develop his own materials that have granted him more creative freedom and additional ways to express himself. He has created and patented a mesh-like material named SIMETECH with translucent qualities that can be molded to create different textures.

For over 20 years now, Arturo and his studio have been designing and producing award-winning contemporary, emotional lighting with a focus on handmade traditions, innovative materials, and references to nature.
