Released at this year’s Milan Furniture Fair, Fritz Hansen‘s Favn sofa is the result of a creative dialogue between the company and the sofa’s designer, Jaime Hayón. Building upon Fritz Hansen’s legendary collection of iconic pieces, the sofa stands out for its combination of Hayón’s fresh, colorful and extroverted style with the company’s classic design vocabulary.
Favn, the Danish word for embrace, is based on a shell; hard on the exterior, the sofa’s interior is soft and welcoming. “I wanted to create a form that embraces you, something really organic,” Hayón says of the sofa. His shell design curves in such a way that the occupant feels embraced. Further, by using a shell that is produced in a manner almost identically to such Fritz Hansen icons as Arne Jacobsen’s Egg and Swan chairs, the design is able to capture the essence of the company. Hayón has interpreted Fritz Hansen’s aesthetic in a way that bridges classic Danish design with Spanish flair.
Presented in ten unique color combinations, the sofa’s design incorporates a mix of three fabrics and shades to express the form of the its three main components: the shell, seat and back and decorative cushions. The combination of texture and tone is appealing to the visual and emotional senses.
