DesignLives with Omer Arbel

April 2015

We are pleased to welcome the founder of Vancouver based Omer Arbel Office and Creative Director of Bocci, Omer Arbel for a DesignLives lecture; a storytelling forum to experience design in a new way, on Tuesday, May 12th from 6 to 9 PM at Luminaire Lab in the Miami Design District. Simultaneously, Luminaire is proud to host the US launch of Bocci’s most recent lighting collection titled 73. A mysterious new addition to its process-driven collection, the 73 is a handcrafted exploration of fabric and glass.

Describing his design ethos, Arbel says, “For us it’s never been about lighting specifically, though we have been involved in lighting. Our mission is about evoking some sort of intangible ethereal quality… An ambient condition.. A sense of unreality… Some allusion to the romantic ideal of the sublime…”

The 73 was unveiled at Maison & Objet Paris in January 2015 and will debut in the United States at Luminaire Lab during Maison & Objet Americas. It explores a technique whereby glass is blown into extremely heat-resistant ceramic fabric that provides both a shape and a texture counterintuitive to glass evoking a formal language we intuitively associate with fabric. By virtue of the loosely controlled manufacturing process, each 73 is completely unique in proportion, size and shape.

In 2013 we hosted Omer Arbel in Chicago during NeoCon for a lecture at the Art Institute of Chicago and exhibition at Luminaire Chicago. Whether a long time design enthusiast or experiencing the transformative power of great design for the first time, we look forward to sharing Omer Arbel’s design philosophy. Moreover, we celebrate with Bocci its ten-year anniversary and our long-standing collaboration during this past decade.
