Only That Which is Necessary

Every year, young designers inspire us to see the world in unimagined ways, bringing fresh ideas and objects to the design platform. The Design Report Awards, held annually during the Salone del Mobile, is one prized stop on Luminaire's enduring trek across the globe in search of great design. This year the Swedish design team studio vit, based in London and headed by Helena Jonasson and Veronica Dagnert, left a remarkable impression on us at the Salone Satellite with their second collection, Marble Lights, and received an honorable mention at the awards.

Like their first collection, the 11 Boxes storage units, Marble Lights are refined and reductionist, drawing attention to shape and form by including only those elements which are necessary. Blown-glass spheres with marble cylinders summon the archetypical incandescent light bulb, while weight, volume and material commune in simple yet surprising ways.

The delicate spheres and weighty cylinders come in various sizes and can be freely combined to create either floor, table or pendant lights. Three equally seductive floor weights may serve as counterweights to suspended lights, or be looped over a flex to secure the pendants. These tractable variations make Marble Lights both versatile and long-lasting.

As the sole US sponsor of the Design Report Awards since their inception thirteen years ago, we are pleased to play a part in supporting future endeavors of studio vit. We look forward to following their career as they continue to pursue design projects that will stand the test of time.
