Homens de Barro - Set of 7
Translating to “men of clay,” Homens De Barro is a set of seven primitive figural sculptures that poetically represent the prototype of the hard worker. Designed by Brazilian artist Selma Abdon Calheira, these figures portray a fictional story of the simple, courageous people who, despite many setbacks, find the strength to continue thriving. Honest in their materials, each unique ceramic statue is made by hand using natural pigments by the Cores da Terra, or “Colors of the Earth,” studio. Providing work for over 100 artisans, this art and economic collective has become well-known for developing and educating local craftspeople while contributing to the economic and cultural development of one of the poorest areas of Brazil. In this way, the figures take on a grander scale as they are more than artistic sculptures, but a means for bettering the lives of their creators. Through their textural appearance and simple form, the Homen De Barro sculptures bring an engaging element of design and storytelling into the home.
