Tonietta Side Chair
Focusing on simplicity and minimalism, Enzo Mari designed the Tonietta Side Chair as a modern and industrialized interpretation of the ubiquitous Thonet chair. The design of the chair started in the 1980s when Mari was asked by legendary Italian furniture brand Zanotta to produce a chair that was “classical, lightweight, compact, and strong.” Mari rose to the challenge, looking back to historic forms and motifs and modernized them with an efficient design that took into account optimization of cost and production. Each of the four die-cast aluminum legs is made from the same mold while the seat and back utilize painted nylon reducing the cost of the item allowing it to become a commercial success. One of the most prominent figures in modern Italian design, Enzo Mari worked on the design for nearly five years to imbue the Tonietta Chair with his characteristic design rationality. The result is an iconic product that effortlessly communicates a subtle elegance in its form, perfect for use in any domestic environment.
